The heating at Central Methodist Church, Middleton Street, Whippleswick, was switched on for the winter after the morning service on Sunday 18 October. By long tradition the boiler goes on the first Sunday the congregation can see its breath during the notices. This year the notices were unusually long.
The property steward, Mr Dennis Fairclough, pressed the button at eleven minutes past twelve. The boiler, installed in 1987 and described in the property log as reliable, gave a cough, thought about it, and lit at the third attempt. Mr Fairclough then bled all eleven radiators personally and asks that nobody else touch his key.
The radiators along the north aisle were warm within the hour. The radiator behind the organ, as in every year since it was fitted, declined to join in.
Rev’d Janet Langley preached on the church at Laodicea, which was neither hot nor cold and was to be spued out of the Lord’s mouth. She said afterwards that the sermon had been planned in the summer and was not about the boiler. Mrs Edna Pargeter, who has sat at the radiator end of pew six since 1988, said it was nice to feel something again.
A retiring collection for the heating raised £38. The thermostat is kept in a locked box in the vestry, and Mr Fairclough would like it to stay there.
